This will be the finished result:

Open a new file 800 x 800, 72px resolution, white background

Duplicate the background layer

Double click on the layer in the layers palette to bring up the blending options and apply the following Pattern Overlay and Color Overlay settings:

Right click on the layer in the layers palette and click Merge Visible

Select the Text Tool, Patchwork Letter font, size 200pt, foreground colour Black

Type each letter of your required text on a new layer, double click on each layer in the layers palette and click Rasterize Type

Using the Move Tool, place the letters as required

Turn off the visibility of the background layer

Right click on any visible layer in the layers palette and click Merge Visible

Now comes the repetitive bit:

Follow the next steps for each letter of your text:

  1. Make the text layer active
  2. Using the Magic Wand Tool, click inside the first letter to select it
  3. Select>Modify>Expand, set to 1, click OK
  4. Create a new layer above the background layer
  5. Fill the selection with white, Ctrl + D to deselect
  6. Double click on the layer in the layers palette to bring up the blending options, and apply a Pattern Overlay, using different patterns from the list of resources given at the top of the page. You will have to play with the scale settings for each pattern.

    When all your letters have a pattern fill, and make sure all fill layers are below the original text layer in the layers palette, turn off the visibility of the background layer

    Right click on any visible layer in the layers palette and click Merge Visible

    Using the Magic Wand tool, hold down the shift key and select all the patches in the letters

    Select>Modify>Expand – set to 1, click OK

    Create a new layer above the background layer

    Make sure white is the foreground colour

    Edit>Fill>Foreground Color – click ok

    Double click on the layer in the layers palette to bring up the blending options and apply the following Pattern Overlay and Color Overlay settings:

    Turn off the visibility of the background layer

    Right click on either visible layer and click Merge Visible

    Double click on the layer in the layers palette to bring up the blending options and apply the following Bevel & Emboss settings:

    Create a new layer

    Turn off the visibility of the background layer

    Right click on either visible layer and click Merge Visible

    Double click on the layer in the layers palette to bring up the blending options and apply the following Bevel & Emboss settings:
