Open a new file 800 x 800, 72px resolution

Select the Text Tool, a bold font (I used Boulder), size around 150pt, foreground colour black.

*Type the required letter

Right click on the layer in the layers palette and click Rasterize Type

Duplicate the layer

Select the Move Tool, and with the arrow keys, move the letter 1 pixel either left or right and one pixel either up or down (change directions for different letters)

Duplicate the layer and move 1 pixel in the same directions you used the first time

Repeat this until you have 10 copies, all shifted 1 pixel in each direction.

Turn off the visibility of the background layer and the original text layer

Right click on one of the visible layers and click Merge Visible

(Alternatively, you can Merge Down, working from Copy 10 to Copy 1)

Double click on the merged layer in the layers palette to bring up the blending options and apply the following Gradient Overlay settings:

Drag the original text layer above the merged layer

Double click on the layer in the layers palette to bring up the blending options and apply the following Color Overlay settings:

Turn off the visibility of the background layer if necessary

Right click on either visible layer and click Merge Visible**

Repeat from * to ** for all required letters.

Below are the gradients and colours I used for other letters:

When you have completed all letters, restore visibility to all layers

Select the Move Tool and place the text as required

Use the Transform Tool (Ctrl + T) to rotate letters

When you are happy with the layout, turn off the visibility of the background layer

Right click on any visible layer and click Merge Visible

Double click on the layer in the layers palette to bring up the blending options and apply the following Drop Shadow settings:

Restore visibility to the background layer

Create a new layer above the background layer and below the text layer

Select the Brush Tool and Spiky Swirls Brushes

Select one of the swirls and add it to your canvas

Create a new layer and add another swirl

Repeat for as many swirls as required

Double click on one of the swirls layers in the layers palette to bring up the blending options and apply the following Gradient Overlay, Drop Shadow, Outer Glow and Bevel & Emboss settings:

Right click on the layer in the layers palette and click Copy Layer Style

Right click on each of the swirl layers in the layers palette and click Paste Layer Style

Turn off the visibility of all layers that are not swirls

Right click on any visible layer and click Merge Visible

Reduce the layer opacity to around 75%

Restore visibility to all layers

Make the background layer active

Select the Gradient Fill Tool, Radial Gradient, with the following settings:

Drag the cursor from the centre of the canvas almost to any corner
